Good News Tuesday: Week 2

Quote of the day: “There are people who the more you do for them, the less they will do for themselves.” – Jane Austen

Yes, I remembered! Here, is another Good News Tuesday to bring a smile to your face.

So, let's get straight to it:

1. US Navy officer becomes first Black female fighter pilot after nearly 110 years of naval aviation.

Lt. J.G Madeline Swegle has become the first U.S Navy’s known Black female fighter pilot. On the 6th July Swegle completed her training at naval flight school to become a fighter pilot, and later on this month will receive the ‘Wings of Gold’ award.

According to USA Today: ‘Swegle’s milestone comes more than 45 years after Rosemary Mariner became the first woman to fly a tactical fighter jet in 1974, The Associated Press reported. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Brenda Robinson became the first African American women to earn her Wings of Gold and become a Navy flight instructor.’

So, let’s all give Madeline Swegle a big congratulations! The sky’s the limit now!

2. Captain America Sends Message to Heroic Boy who saved his little sister from dog attack

Ladies and Gents, we have a young hero in our midst.

Bridger Walker, who is only 6 years old, pulled his sister away from danger when a dog came running towards them. The 6-year-old protected his sister by hiding her from the dog. He was bitten several times in the face, which then required a trip to hospital to receive 90 stitches.

News spread of the heroic kid’s actions and before you know it, Captain America himself sent him a message of praise.

Not only has the kid received a message from Chris Evans but also:

· Robert Downey Jr (aka. Iron Man)

· Tom Holland (aka. Spider-Man)

· Mark Ruffalo (aka. The Hulk)

· Chris Pratt (aka. Star Lord)

· Anne Hathaway (ok she’s not an avenger but she is still pretty badass!)

In fact, Bridger-along with these video messages- has been invited to the set of the new Spiderman film and he’s also been sent an authentic Captain America shield. But most recently, Robert Downey Jr has said Bridger should call him on his next birthday for a special surprise, eek!

Most importantly, as the character Tony Stark rightfully says:

“Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with.”

3. Train Station Employee Stops Bike Thief -Then Stays 4 Hours After Work to Wait for The Owner.

Everybody knows the fear of leaving your bike, locked up in the street. Sure, you might have multiple bike locks and whatnot but for some people that still doesn’t deter them.

Abdul El-Gaydar had just finished his shift at a London train station, he was probably tired and ready to go home and collapse in bed. However, when leaving the station, he saw a man using bolt cutters on a bike outside:

His heroics didn’t stop there. Abdul waited 4 hours for the true owner of the bike to reveal themselves so he could hand it back to him, face-to-face. Steve Farmer arrived at 6pm and assumed the worst, his bike had been stolen. Little did he know his knight in shining armour was waiting inside the station with his bike:

'At the train platform he saw El-Gayar, who had “a smile I will never forget,” recalled Farmer, who entered the code into the cut bike lock to show he was the owner.’

4. Secret Weapon behind the Spitfire- a 13-year-old North London schoolgirl.

I actually came across this story on Celebrity Gogglebox, I was amazed that I hadn’t heard it earlier in the week. I guess TV can teach you something!

Just imagine that.

At the age of 13, your dad comes home from work and asks you to help with the mathematical theory of how to arm Spitfires and Hurricanes with eight machine guns.

Y'know, just another casual night in the Hill household.

The eight machine guns were essential to the design, as it would arm British planes with more firepower compared to the Germans. This design is believed to have been essential in winning the Battle of Britain.

13-year-old me wouldn’t know where to start!

Hazel Hill’s mathematical knowhow has only just come to centre stage and has been recognised by the RAF to celebrate the 80-year anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Without her own superpower, that historical event could have ended very differently.

5. Camera Traps Reveal New Babies Born to World’s Rarest is Great Ape Species Sparking Hope for its Survival.

There is hope after all!

Only found in Nigeria and Cameroon, this western gorilla subspecies is the world’s rarest great ape. And with that in mind, they are hard to find and capture on camera.

According to the Good News Network there is still hope yet for the species survival:

‘But new photos captured for the first time in years shows a group of only 300 Cross River gorillas are left in the wild, conservationists are celebrating new camera trap photos showing several new infants were born.’

This brings much needed good news as the last photos captured of the troops was in 2012, but none of the gorillas have been seen, recorded -or reported killed since then.

These images have helped to provide a hopefully promising future for the Cross-River gorillas.

So, there we have it! What did we think of this week’s Good news Tuesday? Let me know underneath and I’ll see you all next week for another dosage of positive news!
